It's understandable why we can get so carried away at Christmas - it tends to feel like more is more. It can seem like everything must be done excessively to fulfil Christmas cheer or to share on social media. We see shops fill with stacks of decorations and gifts, grocery stores start to fill with platter and sweet delights wrapped in Christmas themed plastic.

There is nothing more exciting than wrapping a surprise for that special someone. You can choose the colour of wrapping, the ribbon to match and top it off with a matching name tag. However, have you noticed the big pile of rubbish left after the excitement of opening passes? And how it gets shoved into the bin, just to be thrown away? Our waste at Christmas time increases by approximately 30% - it's so easy to over do it. From wrapping paper to disposable dinnerware simply for the "ease" of it and not having to do the dishes.

3 simple ways you can reduce waste over Christmas

1. Send an e-gift or gift card

You can't deny that you have received a gift and only kept it on hand to be polite. It is said that over 20 million people receive unwanted gifts at Christmas time. So why not allow your loved one to choose what they need or want this year? And even better, send via email - saves time and waste which makes everybody happy, including the environemtn

2. Zero waste wrapping

This year, among many previous years, we are opting for a more environmentally friendly gift wrapping! And we would like you to join us. Not only do these look beautiful but they can be kept and re-used. It's like two gifts in one!

3. Only buy food you need or prepare to freeze

Literally, tonnes of food is disposed of at Christmas time. It was reported on ozharvest.org that over 5 million tonnes is disposed of each year, at Christmas time, in Australia alone. It is a time we can stop and reflect on just how much we need, if we have things in our fridge or freezer which can be used first or if we can freeze leftovers rather
