Our paths first collided for our Everyday Wellness Ritual Box with RetroKitchen's Sponge Cloth contribution. We felt they aligned beautifully with our values, voice and community and we wanted to introduce a more eco-friendly and sustainable cloth that could be used for cleaning purposes and then put into compost rather then waste.

We are always wanting to expand our commitment to the environment and decided an ECO. Biodegradable Sponge Cloth was a must-have. If you are not familiar with RetroKitchen we discussed their story in more detail with Tracey who brought RetroKitchen to life.

Tell us the story of RetroKitchen.

"I started my business many years ago when I invented the SteadySticks...a wine glass holder for picnics. I quit my corporate marketing job and threw my heart and soul into my own small business. More than 15 years on in the homewares industry I began to fixate on the amount of product manufactured every year for the gift giving season that is pretty much landfill. All this waste just for the sake of Christmas. Trade shows with halls and halls of product that never goes away or breaks down. So I shifted my focus to only developing products that are lovely to gift, joyous to receive but don't generate landfill.

Our brands RetroKitchen and Urban Greens now continue with only this ethos in mind."

What is your most popular product?

"RetroKitchen Sponge Cloths to this day are still pretty much our top range. Useful, fun, quirky designs, great to gift, great to receive, amazing to use, and goes in the compost when worn out."

Tell us more about your commitment to sustainbility.

"We only develop product that fits the brief of sustainable, compostable, useful, but still very much gift-able.

We are committed to product packaging that is compostable and we operate with a sustainable approach in the background operations of our business that most people don’t see; we use recycled shredded paper for all our packaging, biodegradable film for pallet shipping and generally commit to very little waste in our business.

We also have a beautiful warehouse garden that grows our lunchtime salad ingredients."

Do you use essential oils and if so, how do you use them?

"Yes. I have a diffuser in the office. Each afternoon when energy drops I pop it on. Gives us the lift we need. I also use a diffuser at home. My son gets irritating hay-fever, so I actually use the Sinus Clear Blend. Does the trick to help stop the sneezing and clear the itchy nose."

Your thoughts on working with ECO. Modern Essentials.

"It's been a real privilege to work with ECO. Modern Essentials. I genuinely love the products. The concept of the ritual box is wonderful and it was a thrill to see our sponge cloths go out in the recent one. I hope Eco.Modern Essentials customers loved the sponges too!"
